I've changed my email address. How do I change my login? What if I change institutions?

In the navigation bar, you'll see a link titled Login/Account Info. If you've already logged in, this will take you to a list of MyData links. One of those is Edit Account Settings. Here you can change your password, email address, or any other information you have previously provided.

How do I report a problem with your Web site?

If you are experiencing a problem with the Web site, please email web-support@icpsr.umich.edu. Please be prepared to provide the following information:

  • An exact description of the problem, including the URL where it occurs
  • Information on which Web browser and version you are using
  • Details about your computer (operating system, connection speed)
  • Information on whether the problem is unique to your computer, or occurs on a number of computers at your institution (if you know)

Please understand that without a detailed explanation of the problem, it is unlikely that we will be able to resolve the matter.

When I attempt to access data from home, I get an "access denied" message, even though my institution is an ICPSR member. Why?

Assuming your OR has provided us with the IP ranges for your institution, you can access data from home, but you first have to login to the ICPSR Web site from on campus. Once you do so, your MyData account is validated for off campus downloads for the next six months. Every time you log in to the ICPSR Web site from on campus, that is extended another six months.

In the event that you simply cannot get on campus (for example, you're on sabbatical), simply contact netmail@icpsr.umich.edu. We'll check with your institution's Official Representative and then manually validate your account.

The Search Results page indicates that my search is "sorted by relevance." What does that mean?

Our search engine enables you to sort search results in several ways:

  • Relevance: The search engine determines how closely a page matches your search terms. The most relevant studies will appear at the top of the list of search results. Sorting by relevance is not available for some searches.

  • Released/Updated (newest) and Released/Updated (oldest): For studies, this date refers to the date on which ICPSR last updated the data, or began distributing the data, whichever is most recent.

  • Title A-Z and Title Z-A: Searches are sometimes sorted by title, when all items are equally relevant and the date isn't especially useful.

  • Time Period (newest) and Time Period (oldest): This refers to the date the study covers, and the sort looks at the last year in the time period (when the time period is a range or groups of ranges).

  • Most Cited in the ICPSR Bib.: This is the count of citations that ICPSR has found that relate to the study.

  • Most Downloaded: This is an indication of unique downloads over the last 90 days.

Can I search for STF 3A and other letter-number combinations?

Yes. You can search for alphanumeric terms.

Example: STF 3A or Eurobarometer 43.1BIS

Can I do Boolean searching on the Web site?

You can't do true Boolean searching currently. If you enter multiple terms into the search box it treats them as if they were connected by a Boolean AND.

What is ICPSR?

Established in 1962, the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) is the world's largest archive of digital social science data. We acquire, preserve, and distribute original research data and provide training in its analysis. We also offer access to publications based on our data holdings.
